About the plant

In one look Nemesia plant looks like an orchid. But they are not orchids they are small bedding plants. You can grow them in pots, hanging baskets.

The good part is you can also grow them on the borders of your garden.

If you want a good alternative to grass then grow nemesia plant as ground covers.

Nemesias are native to Africa and have many varieties. You can grow any of them in your garden because they have the same growing needs. But there are two popular varieties that we often see in UK gardens.

Nemesia strumosa and N. caerulea are commonly grown in gardens and containers. Remember that plants that we grow in gardens grow taller than container plants.

If you like blue and white flowers then choose N. Strumosa. On the other hand, if you like Pink, purple, white, blue, or red flowers then choose N. caerulea.

Growing nemesia plants

As I already said, the growing and caring needs of all types of Nemesia plants are the same. Therefore, you can grow any type of nemesia with the below care guide.

If necessary, make a note for quick use.

Nemesia plants need full sunlight. They grow best under direct sun rays. Even if you are growing them in containers you have to move it to the full sun to fill its light needs. Nemesias need a high amount of light and warm weather to bloom.

Once it blooms arrange some shade for it in the afternoon. Because the flowers of the plant cannot tolerate the hot sun rays in summer from 12 pm to 3 pm.

At this time the sun emits high intense rays that can fade the flower color.

If your plant is not producing flowers this means the low light is the issue. If you like to grow it indoors, you need to put the plant pot on a sunny window.

Those who do not have sunny can use grow lights. 400 watts LED grow light will be the best for nemesia like plants.

In its native place, the flowering plant grows in sandy soil. This means it needs less amount of water. But the twist is it needs continuous moist soil.

If you are growing it outdoors in the garden then water it like you waters other plants. If you forget watering it can tolerate it for few days. Garden plants absorb water from garden soil.

In the case of container-grown nemesias, you have to use special potting soil. These types of soils are specially designed to hold more water without being waterlogged.

Give water to the plant roots, do not mist water on plant leaves and flowers. Because doing so will damage the flowers and your plant drop most of the flowers before time.

Use any kind of water that is suitable for human consumption. It can be bottled water, tap water, or packed filtered water.

In short, the water you use to drink is best for watering plants.

If you are growing it from Nemesia seeds, you need to use seed starting soil (commercial peat). Once the seeds develop into seedlings then you can transfer them to an outdoor garden or in pots.

In-plant pots you need to use well-draining soil. Because this plant is prone to root fungus. It is a deadly disease for plants. In the UK most houseplants die due to root fungus.

To save your plants, use potting soil in containers instead of normal garden soil. Buy houseplant soil from the market and fill the container.

Remember that the soil bag should have perlite-like substances to hold water for a long time.

If you are planning to grow them in a garden. Then your garden soil has to be rich in organic material. If it has enough organic material then it is good but if not, then use compost to amend your garden soil.

Compost adds organic material to your soil and improves its fertility. In compost amended soil you can grow any type of vegetable plant, herb, and flower plant.

Do not add compost to your container if you are going to put them inside your home. Because the compost is derived from organic waste and it releases an unpleasant smell.

It also contains some healthy bacteria that break down the nutrients and make them easily available for plant roots.

Note: Commercial sold potting mix is best for indoor growing plants.

As we all know African countries have warm weather. Therefore, this plant also needs warm weather to grow. This also clears that Nemesis plants cannot survive in winters. Cool temperature is not a problem but it cannot survive in freezing winds.

Put the plant container outside in the direct sun in the early days of summer. This will speed up the blooming process and the plant produces a heavy bloom.

Like our body needs a comfortable temperature to live. Plants also have a comfortable temperature range. In some places, Nemesias tolerate 5 degrees C while in others they die when the temperature drops below12 degrees C.

Nobody knows why this happens. But professional botanists said this is due to the different nemesia plant care techniques.

Some people forgot about their plant needs. While others make them strong before the winter hits. This helps them to stand healthy in cold temperatures.

In the UK you need to move the nemesia plant containers inside in winters. Put them outside again when the spring arrives.

In simple words humidity for plants means the moisture content in the air. There are many ways by which you can increase room humidity.

In this case, for best nemesia plant care put the plant pot in low to moderate humidity. Remember that only rainforest plants need high humidity.

Other plants need low to moderate air moisture.

Nemesias grows in sandy soil in warm weather. This means it thrives when the warm winds blow. Cool air has high humidity. This clears that the normal humidity that we have in our homes is perfect for the plant. Also, the moisture content that we have in outdoor air is good for growing nemesia plants in outdoor gardens.

Keep in mind that plants that bloom in spring need a low humid environment.

For your other plants, you can use a plant humidifier to increase the humidity level.

If you are growing it in an outdoor garden in rich organic soil, you don’t need to use fertilizers. But for the best possible nemesia plant care and bloom, you can use slow-releasing fertilizer. This type of fertilizer releases nutrients at a slower rate. This makes a continuous chain of nutrients to plant roots.

This way nutrients are always available for plants. They never become nutrient deficient.

For outdoor plants use granular or powdered forms of nutrients.

For indoor or container plants use liquid nutrients. Synthetic liquid nutrients speed up the container plant growth.

They also do not get collected near the root area. Plants spend few amounts of their energy to absorb liquid nutrients that we mix in water. Always follow the instruction of the nutrient bottle. Dilute it with clean drinkable water.

Pruning means trimming the plant to keep it in good shape. In this technique, we use a knife or sharp shears to trim the plant. Then we look for the overly grown leaves and stem. Then we use tools to cut them to keep the plant short.

This also includes removing the yellow and dead parts of the plants.

Pruning is necessary to encourage new growth. If the plant is not showing proper growth. Then prune the top part and it will start growing faster.

Propagation is the process by which we grow more plants just like the mother plant. We propagate plants from seeds that we save from the current plant or the cutting of the current plant.

In nemesia plant care, we propagate it from seeds and cuttings. First of all, let the current plant make flowers then seeds. If you grow them in an outdoor garden the plants will propagate automatically. This process is called self-seeding.

In container plants, take these seeds in plant them in spring when the temperature rises to 15 degrees C. Once the seeds become seedlings transplant them in an outdoor garden or other pots.

Nemesia plants can common problems

The only problem that the nemesias plant face is root rot. This root fungus is the result of excess water. It is more common in container-grown plants. Because growers give extra water to the growing nemesia plants. They often think that plants need water daily. This is not true plants need water when the soil becomes dry.

To save your plants from root rot. Always check the soil conditions before watering them. use a digital soil moisture testing meter for an exact reading.

Or use your index finger to check the soil moisture.

Insert your finger in the soil and feel the moisture. If the soil feels moist do not water and if it feels dry give some water to keep it moist.

Note: Do not use plant containers without a bottom hole. Because this type of container cannot save your plants in case of accidental overwatering.

The bottom hole is necessary to drain the extra water that is poured by the grower. This saves plants from many diseases.
