Initial costs of starting indoor gardening for beginners

It depends upon the size of your indoor garden but usually, you just need a few pounds to start a home garden.

Let me explain,

The cost of a small hobby indoor garden is totally depending upon the below things

  1. Cost of seeds
  2. Cost of fertilizers
  3. Cost of a container (it is best to use old containers from home)
  4. Cost of growing tools and accessories (in case of the vegetable garden and fruit garden)

For an herb garden, you do not need to buy growing tools like grow lights, grow tents, heat mats, etc. just put them on the window shelf where the growing herb can get sufficient sunlight.

If you want to grow herbs or other plants in your basement then you need to buy grow lights.

The cost of seeds varies according to the season and ordered quantity. You pay less if you buy seeds in more quantity. Containers are cheap to buy.

Grow lights are costly but in long run, they are quite affordable. You can get a decent light between 20 to 170 pounds depending upon the number of plants and area you want to cover.

How to start indoor gardening for beginners

To start an indoor garden, you have to learn about the basic things first. Like Space, humidity, fertilizers, etc

Find the Space:

First of all, select the place where you want to set up your garden.  It is totally depending upon your choice, you can grow indoor plants anywhere in the house, even in a dark area or in the basement. If you are going to use grow lights then every corner of your house can be used for growing plants.

But if you do not want to use grow lights then you need to select a place where your plant can receive enough sunlight (6 to 9 hours).

Select Plant Type:

The second step is, select a plant you want to grow. For beginners, it is best to start with herbs. Herbs do not need high bright light to grow so you do not need to buy a grow light and are also easy to grow with minimal maintenance.

I had started my indoor garden with Basil. It was the first plant that I grew at home 10 years ago. Now I have lots of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers in my indoor garden.

Once you gain some experience take one step forward and grow big plants.

To grow herbs, always start from seeds buy high-quality seeds from a reputed nursery or seed store. You can order them online from the garden store also.

90% of plant health depends on the quality of seeds.

Choose your Container:

You can plant your seeds in old yogurt containers or in other similar containers. But if you want to grow like professionals, I suggest you choose a plant container made of clay or cement. Wooden and plastic containers are in fashion now but there are many drawbacks to them so I do not encourage you to choose them.

Plastic is not good for health and it also releases toxic gas which increases your home pollution. Another thing is a potting mixture in plastic containers does not hold water content for a long time and you need to water frequently.

Wooden container manufacturers add chemicals into it to make it rot-resistant. Go for clay and cemented pots only. Make sure the container you choose has a hole at the bottom this hole is called a drainage hole. It is there to save your plant from excess water.

If you accidentally add excess water to the pot the extra water will drain out through this bottom hole.

Grow light:

In case you want to grow vegetables and fruits at home. You will need to buy a grow light to grow them. you cannot grow lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, lemon, and other food items by placing them on a window shelf.

These plants required bright high-intensity light for a long duration. LED grow lights are the best to choose from, they are energy efficient, emit a high amount of full spectrum of light, no maintenance cost, no extra heat management system required.

LED grow lights have tons of benefits over other traditional lighting systems.

Fertilizers:

Every plant grew indoor needs good fertilizers to grow fast and healthy. When you grow plants under direct sunlight. They get essential nutrients from the soil and sun. But when it comes to growing them under artificial grow light, it is the grower’s responsibility to give high-quality fertilizers to plants.

Herbs do not need fertilizers in high amounts like in the case of vegetables and some fruits.

Essential fertilizers for house plants.

Potting soil:

The basic formula of indoor potting soil is 50 % garden soil, 40% coco coir, and 10% compost (nutrient source).

You can also add perlite instead of coco coir if your plants do not need much moisture in the growing medium.

Coco coir holds the moisture in them for a long time and you do not have to water your plants frequently.

Humidity:

Most of the plants can survive in 30 to 45% humidity but you need to maintain it near about 50% in the air. You need to increase the humidity level by more than 50% when you are growing plants native to tropical forests.

Summer is the time when the air has less water content (humidity). At this time choose a cool vapor humidifier to maintain the right level of humidity for your plants.

Temperature:

Temperature is a crucial part of indoor growing and you will be glad to know that you do not need to do anything to maintain the temperature. Every plant can easily tolerate and grow in the 10 degrees C to 35 degrees C temperature range.

Gardening tools for beginners

The very first tool you need to buy is Garden gloves. Water-resistant nylon made gloves are best to use.

The second thing you need to buy is a Soil pH tester kit to check the acidic level of the soil. But if you are using potting soil then you do not need to buy this pH tester kit. pH test kits are mandatory in hydroponic growing systems.

You should also use safety glasses while working with plants and fertilizers.

These are the basic things that you need to have even if you are growing plants for the first time.
